Pond Making

Today the students at An tIonad Glas worked on building a pond at the bottom of the new enterprise acre..

We dug the hole with a JCB, then we shaped the sides by hand and lined it with three layers of recycled silage plastic.
At the end we planted fruit bushes around the edges; the light reflected from the pond will help the blackcurrants to ripen faster.

We’re looking forward to frogs breeding in the pond and hope that they will help to control slugs in the vegetable garden.

Hedge Laying

Today we tried our hand at Hedge Laying. This traditional hedge management technique produces a great stock-proof fence whilst also being good for wild life.
