At the The Organic College we believe that being active in our community both locally and globally is the key to developing sustainable agriculture for all. This page lists some of our work in this area.
Each year the college hosts a range of events . These include public seminars, workshops, heritage week events and other activities involving the local community and the organic movement as a whole.
Exchange with Italian National College
In 1999 An t-Ionad Glas became involved in an exchange program with “Centro F. Mancini”, a Biological Agricultural Training Centre in Umbria, Italy. The centre, under the auspices of the Italian Ministry of Agriculture is involved in training agricultural officers and farmers in Organic Agriculture.
The main feature of the project is exchange visits of students and teachers between the two colleges. It also facilitates the exchange of experience, practices and relevant research information.
Initial visits by teachers from both colleges have proved mutually beneficial. This is a very exciting initiative, which will benefit the promotion and support of Organic Agriculture in both countries. The projects are financed through LEADER 11.
Community Herb Garden
This college has received funding from West Limerick Resources Ltd for the construction and development of a Community Herb Garden, which will include Medicinal, Culinary Sensory and Children’s Herbs. This garden is currently in the initial stages of construction and will hopefully be in full bloom summer 2002.
Heritage Potatoes and Open Day
As part of National Heritage Week, the college held an Open Day on
September 1st, 2001. A new variety of potato, Orla, was on display. Sixteen other heritage varieties were also on show as well as machinery and potato tasting.
Submissions for Further Development.
The college is at present drafting a Strategic Development Plan. This is in conjunction with the proposed expansion of the college premises, we would hope to develop and expand the college to offer a variety of courses including more organic courses, environmental and craft courses in the coming years. Submissions from any interested parties are invited.
Fundraising for College Projects.
During the peak growing season, produce from the college garden and enterprise acre is for sale, either direct from the garden or through the market in The Square, Dromcollogher, every fortnight (phone for details of market dates.)
