PACHAMAMA ONEWORLD IRELAND is a charity for environment education that was founded in Ireland in the year 2001 .

Pachamama pronounced ‘patch-a-mama’
is earth mother, a living and common mother to all, in the language of the Andes and Amazon of South America.

Our Aim is to actively raise funds for environment education projects in Ireland and producer countries by trading organic products on the Irish marketplace in an ethical way. By ‘ethical’ we mean we give better than fair trade prices and only trade products that are good for the producers and consumers environment, physically and socio-economically.
This enables producer communities to self-fund environment education and sustainable development where they live. We also wish to educate consumers on the story of each product so that they have a knowledge of what they are supporting.

Cafe Rio Intag Fair Trade Coffee for Sale!

Cafe Rio Intag is cultivated in the Rio Intag cloud forest region of northern Ecuador where the local community are learning how to develop in harmony with their environment by practising sustainable agriculture. This coffee is shade grown under native trees.

The cloud forest in Ecuador is one of 10 recognised hotspots for biodiversity on planet Earth. The coffee is grown and sold by members of an association of farmers , who work small family owned plots in Intag, a 2,200km2 region in the province of Imbabura in northwestern Ecuador. Association members apply a series of exacting norms in the production of organic crops on their farms.

Cafe Rio Intag is hand-processed. The beans are sun-dried and carefully roasted in small quantities to ensure the exquisite flavour and aroma of the coffee.

AN INTERESTING ORGANIC FACT In nature the coffee plant (caffea arabica) grows as an understory shrub that does not like too much sunshine.
Shade grown is slow grown the natural way, using local organic fertilisers and organic pest control methods (namely birds that inhabit the forest canopy).
The majority of coffees sold in Ireland today are ‘sun grown’ intensive varieties, that utilise massive amounts of poisonous chemical fertilisers and pesticides polluting rivers and drinking water…and coffee consumers! (residues of chemicals used in intensive cultivation remain in coffee beans after processing).

SHADE GROWN IS ‘TRUE ORGANIC’ COFFEE.

TASTE AND FEEL THE DIFFERENCE
“Every cup you drink is actively helping the rainforests!”

Cafe Rio Intag’s traditional slow grown method of cultivation produces a relaxing cup of coffee unlike the nervous reaction associated with ‘sun grown’ chemical coffees.

ETHICAL TRADE…”Learn about what you are funding.”

CRITICAL NEWS!!!
THE AMAZON RAINFOREST, THE LUNGS OF OUR PLANET, WILL BE GONE BY THE YEAR 2020
– unless we do something now – “One Solution” – Buy ONLY ‘Shade Grown’ coffee!

In trading this product PACHAMAMA ONEWORLD IRELAND are working directly with the community of Intag and are supporting their sustainable development. The story of Rio Intag and their shade grown organic coffee cultivation method is positive news when it comes to the rainforests. Unsustainable agriculture, practised by massive uncaring corporations, is destroying rainforests at a catastrophic rate. Last year 10,000km2 of Amazon in Brazil alone disappeared! – Ireland is 70,000km2.

THE SOLUTION is communities like Rio Intag who are learning that by nurturing their valuable local resource, collectively, they can create and care for their environment and save it so that future generations can enjoy living there too. We are part of their development story now and hope you will become part of it too by purchasing Cafe Rio Intag everytime you shop for coffee (you can visit one of the shops listed below that supply Cafe Rio Intag or you can purchase a 6 month supply directly at a discount price – mail order directions after suppliers list below).
You can follow their community development story on our upcoming web-site and see where your support is going. We will post newsletters from each producer community and their environment improving work on our new website.

“YOU ARE WHAT YOU SUPPORT”

THE POWER OF CONSUMERISM
As consumers we collectively hold a power to make positive change. By learning about each product and only supporting environment improving products we can actively help the environment around the world. We are also taking account of what we are funding each time we shop and, even more importantly, consuming products with a positive Karma.

SHOP DIRECT WITH US or VISIT A SUPPLIER NEAR YOU (see list)

“We are urging all consumers to ‘Learn the Story’ of what you are supporting each time you shop and learn how, by shopping consciously, you can actively support inspiring projects to develop in a sustainable manner every time you shop for coffee. Cafe Rio Intag is our first ethically traded product. We will be bringing more online in the new year.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE ENVIRONMENT PROJECTS PACHAMAMA ONEWORLD IRELAND ARE HELPING:

Amazon ReforestationWe are trading organic ‘shade grown’ coffee from Ecuador to raise funds for a developing project called ‘Amazon Reforestation’. Areas of deforested Amazon will be reforested and sustainable agritourism investigated.

The sustainable development of a remote Andean community. This year we delivered solar panels to a newly built school and centre for learning a life in harmony with nature. The community live at 4000mtrs and it is the first time they have had electricity. We will also be sending a small wind turbine and hydro turbine to this community. The community is researching the growing of organic cereals and medicinal teas that we will trade for them.
Below is the traditional style school called ‘ya-chay wasi’ or ‘house of learning’ that has recently been constructed and will be powered by the solar panels donated by PACHAMAMA ONEWORLD IRELAND.

Community Environment School, Chereq, Peru

The development of a Centre of Environment Learning for street children in the city of Chiclayo, Peru This centre will be for training young people in a variety of living skills including arts, crafts, music and organic gardening skills.

Establishing an Eco-Tourism trail in South America. We are working with a number of communities in Ecuador and Peru who wish to start a network of ecological tourism.
The vision is community run Ecolodges and centres for investigating sustainable agriculture and other enterprises that will self fund development by receiving paying guests and volunteers, as well as trading what they produce.

PICTURE THIS:Tourists when arriving in South America can stay in a network of community run Ecolodge Farms and witness life in such multi-diverse locations as high mountain, rain forest and desert coast. Each guesthouse/ecolodge will actively participate in the sustainable development of the community in each location.

Small Wind Turbine Trials. in partnership with An tIonad Glas Organic College in Dromcollogher. We will be conducting small scale wind energy trials. A small wind turbine has been bought and is ready for trials.

Small Wind Turbine Trials

Andean/Irish Knitwear Design. This year an Irish clothes designer traveled to Ecuador to produce a range of knitwear for sale in the Irish marketplace. The area of Ecuador is renowned for its knitting cooperatives and this was the first time they have worked with a designer from Ireland. The knitwear will be on sale in select shops nationwide this coming autumn. It includes childrens and adult knits.

Thank you for posting this! This is the only coffee I will drink. I currently live in the U.S., but my family is closely involved with Rio Intag. I enjoyed reading about the benefits of buying ‘fair trade’ and ‘shade-grown’ coffee, some of which I didn’t know about until reading this web page. Thank you again!
